Oreck XL Tabletop Truman Cell

Rating Factors:

1) Value: 8/24 points - The MSRP is $349.95. The estimated square footage cleaned is 100 sqft. The Value equation is as follows: 100 * (1 - ((($349.95 initial + $115.96/year)/100 sqft)/8 removal points)) = 41.76. 41.76 = 8 points - poor value.

2) What is Removed: 8/16 points - Removal of Larger Particles >0.3 microns - Very Good Removal, 3-points. Removal of Smaller Particles <0.3 microns - Good Removal, 2-points. Removal of Odors and Gases - Fair Removal, 1-point, Removal of VOCs - Fair Removal, 1-point, Removal of Basic Microorganisms - Fair Removal, 1-point, Removal of Advanced Microorganisms - Poor Removal, 0-points.

3) Yearly Operating Costs: 9/15 points - The Odor Absorber (carbon filter) needs replacement every 12 months $49.99. Other options for maintenance are optional and not included in costs. Calculating electricity usage: 85 watts/1000 X $.0886/kwh x 24 hours/day X 365 days/year = $65.97/year. Total cost $115.96/year. Average to operate.

4) Quality: 9/12 points - The quality is decent. The bottom serial number tag says "made in China". Plastic prevails; not a total negative. The Truman Cell is a cool design. Fit, Finish, and Workmanship - Good Quality, 3-points. Cleaning Technologies - Very Good Quality, 4-points. Support Material - Excellent Quality, 2-points.

5) Warranty: 6/8 points - The Oreck XL Tabletop has a basic 3-year warranty. The odor absorber filter and optional scent cartridges are not covered unless defective. The Truman cell is covered for the life of the unit if used for residential use. If unit is used commercially, the entire warranty is reduced to 1-year. Very Good Warranty.

6) Maintenance and Cleaning: 5/6 points - The only routine maintenance is replacing the odor adsorber filter every 12 months. This task should only take 5-10 minutes. Easy Maintenance, 3-points. Cleaning is recommended every 2-4 weeks or as needed. You can use a special liquid to clean the Truman cell($14.99) or soak in warm water. Other parts can be rinsed or lightly vacuumed. All are removed easily. Not counting dry time it takes 12 to 20 minutes to do a cleaning. The odor adsorber (carbon filter) can be lightly vacuumed, but needs replacing every 12 months. Average Cleaning 2-points.

7) Look and Feel: 4/6 points - I found the Oreck XL Tabletop very basic looking, but functional. Looks Good, 2-points. The buttons were easy to find. No remote for fan settings. Some plastic pieces feel inexpensive. Feels Good, 2-points.

8) Years in Business: 5/5 points - David Oreck started the company in 1963. As of the date of this review, he is still active in the company. They are located in New Orleans, LA.

9) Noise Level: 3/5 points - Quiet on low. Oreck recommends running unit on low when around and medium and high when not. High is loud. Average Noise Level.

10) Set-Up: 3/3 points - Easy Set-up.

total = 60/100 points

Conclusion: A good basic-duty, compact purifier.
